THE SARTORIAL EDIT

THE PERFECT SUMMER ESPADRILLe
There has long been a debate as to whether the espadrille is French or Spanish. Though the Spanish believe it is historically theirs, the French argue that the area of Catalonia where the espadrille made its first known appearance was at the time part of France. Either way, it is in fact the Americans (via Ralph Lauren) who make the most comfortable pair (and I’ve tried them all).
MONTECRISTI PANAMA HAT
There is no finer Panama than the Montecristi, and the real deal is one that is handwoven in Ecuador and takes months to complete. Interestingly, the black band and bow often seen on this style is a nod to the tradition that started as a sign of mourning after the death of Prince Albert and over time became the fashion. There are very few places to find this true work of art, but Lock & Co. Hatters in St. James London is a great place to start.
The Beard
Where did the revived obsession with The Beard come from? Seems it has become the look of choice for everyone from the farmer to the famous, and it’s here to stay. Personally, I am not a fan of the scruffy, outward-bound look, and feel a beard should still be trimmed and groomed. To that end, nothing is more crucial than a proper shaving brush, and nothing less shall do than one made of badger hair. The Germans, as ever, have the perfect tool for the job, the Mühle Edition Meissen Silvertop. (The only thing better? If you can find one finished in ancient oak.) These brushes stand the test of time, and, as with a fine watch, you are looking after it for the next generation.
Travel Comforts
As travel resumes and the world starts to open up again, we seem to have forgotten what to wear on those long transatlantic flights. Two items from Loro Piana balance style and comfort beautifully and always make you feel as if you are travelling private, regardless of your cabin: their cashmere-and-cotton-blend sweatpants, paired with their cotton polo shirt, are sprezzatura at its best.
