GAIL BIRD AND YAZZIE JOHNSON
Gail Bird (Santo Domingo Pueblo/Laguna) and Yazzie Johnson (Navajo) have known one another since childhood and have been designing jewelry together for over 30 years. Their designs, centered around high-quality gemstones, are inspired by the designs of prehistoric Native Americans, meticulously hand-crafted with an innovative, architectural twist, that also speaks to their shared commitment to craftsmanship and cultural integrity.
Says Bird, "The stones, materials, design, and images we use reflect the continuing adaptation and growth of all design while remembering the importance of wearable jewelry to our cultures." Their work marries a deep respect for tradition with innovative explorations of form, texture, and material.
Their designs echo the past, but display exquisite modernity, and can be found in many permanent museum collections, as well as the finest galleries (including The Owings Gallery) and stores in the world, including one of our personal favorites, Shiprock Santa Fe, in New Mexico.
